MAD Architect was commissioned to build a kindergarten with a floating roof around a historic district of Peking that would reflect upon “intergenerational integration”.
The historical part of the 9275 square-meter building complex serves as a senior citizens’ apartment, while the modern “floating” courtyard surrounding it makes part of a kindergarten. The concept seems to be working well, with the two different worlds joined together by this remarkable blend of buildings. Following its completion at the end of 2019, the kindergarten now serves as a pre-school education space for 390 children aged from 1.5 to 6 years old.
